Magento merger by e-Bay leads to new e-commerce arena.

Magento Merger by Ebay Leads to a new arena in e-Commerce

Magento and Ebay have agreed to merge in order to become a major player in the e-commerce world. Having operated stores under ebay and Magento and a number of other e-commerce platforms. We have a keen eye for what is happening in the e-commerce world. Magento Developers will want to keep a close eye on Magento who has already seen the infulence of e-Bay on their business model. Since e-Bay became a major share holder in Magento, Paypal has seen its profile raised within the Magento solution.

Magento and E-Bay Investment

Magento embraced E-Bay with open arms in March 2010 when e-Bay became the first outside investor in Magento. Previously trading under the name of Varien of which traces of the code can still be found. Magento has seen influence and the core of Magento has certainly seen some development enhancements that have likely came as a result of the merger. Ebay have undoubtedly plans on how to take advantage of this stable platform and with version 1.6 of the community edition very much on the way to a release, we can expect to see some interesting features heading towards our stores.

Magento Module Development

One of the most popular features which has been requested over the years is the integration of Magento into eBay Stores. There have been a number of companies have set about developing this module and we have got our own version which we have put on hold until the full details of the merger between eBay and Magento become known. There are suspicions that eBay will seek to make such functionality a core capability. It may also be extended to work with the growing in popularity Magento Go platform.

Magento Community

The Magento community has been around since Magento was first released and the community has been divided on how to react to the merger; some groups feel this could be the best thing to ever happen to Magento and others are worried. Roy Rubin of Magento has suggested that eBay has learned the Magento “ecosystem”. He has been highly praising eBay as a supporting partner of Magento and claims that the goals of eBay and Magento are very much the same goals. In a frequently asked questions document released by Magento, they assure us that third party extensions that are competitors to eBay will still be available. They admit of course that eBay’s platform will be supported.

X.Commerce

On the X.com website which was predominately associated to Paypal until recently, we are able to see that eBay strongly feel that Magento will be a strong part of the platform which they are trying to build. It is to be powered by the combined forces of eBay, PayPal and Magento and I look forward to seeing the results of the X.commerce Innovate Developers Conference in October where hopefully more information will be made available regarding eBay’s plans.
